Golf Tourney for Kori

Many of you are familiar with my friend Kori's story of love and loss. She is still awaiting a new heart and should be bumped to the top of the transplant list in Salt Lake City in the next couple weeks. She suffered another stroke last week, but has miraculously (again) come through! The second annual Love4Kori Golf Tournament is May 1st and I welcome you to come play to help her out--click on her picture to get an entryform! If you would like to stay up-to-date on her progress, click HERE to go to her CarePages.

Update on Kori

This morning I read an encouraging update about my friend Kori who, as many of you know, is awaiting a heart transplant in Salt Lake City. I covet your continued prayers for her and her family! ~Resa

This is Kori's dad. I arrived yesterday in a snow storm. Kori and Brenda met me at the airport. Kori and I went directly to her physical therapy appointment and Brenda stayed at the airport to catch her flight to Denver.

Kori very much enjoyed having Brenda here. See cleaned everything throughly and even prepared food and froze it. She must have known that I know nothing about cooking and was concerned about Kori's well being with me in charge of food service. That was very thoughtful of her; and accurate.

Kori and I had a full day today. T-Ann, one of the Lvad coordinators, had Kori visit with a 13 year old boy who has very severe congestive heart failure and has had an Lvad device implanted. He was feeling pretty low. We went on a tour of the medical air transport facility and even went outside, with the young man in a wheelchair. I think Kori improved his outlook. Alot of the people in surgical ICU that worked with Kori were amazed at how well she is doing and how good she looked. I can see a great improvement in her vision and mobility since the last time I saw her. We were in a room with a technician and 3 Doctors while Kori was having an echocardiogram and Erin, the other Lvad coordinator, came in. Kori said to her, "You got a haircut, I really like it." The Doctors were amazed that she could see that.

After the echocardiogram, the three Doctors met in private and then Dr. Selzman (Kori's cardiac surgeon) spoke with Kori and me. He said they are excited about how much her heart has improved. The damaged area is now scar tissue, but the remainder of her heart is "squeezing" very strongly. Next month, they will re-admit her to the hospital and see if her heart can function without the Lvad. Dr. Selzman said he didn't want to get our hopes up, but that this was worth exploring. If it turns out to be a 50-50 proposition, they will still recommend a transplant. They don't want to do this unless they feel there is an 80-90% chance of success. They will try to repair the damaged area and let her heart take over. Even if this is successful, he said she might only get 2-5 years out of her heart, but that would still be a benefit. If the Lvad is successfully removed, it should also help her antibody count. Do miracles really happen?

Hearts are Healing VI

Nov. 3rd, 9:00 a.m. (Mountain)

Posted Nov 3, 2008 10:59am~by Kori's sister

Kori and I got moved and settled into the transplant house this weekend. It is much better than being confined to a one room motel room. Kori is actually still asleep this morning (I'm about to wake her up) and I'm out in the living room working. This house is actually called "The House of Hope and Healing" and is used mostly by patients waiting for transplants but is also available to others that are dealing with various illnesses. The house use to be a part of Warren Jeffs polygamist compound. It has 6 large bedrooms with private baths, a huge communal kitchen, family room and living room. The house next door was also part of the compound. It is 30,000 sq. ft., with 34 bedrooms and a huge kitchen/living room. The living room alone is 100 sq. ft. by 40 sq. ft. It was also used for awhile as part of the "House for Hope and Healing" but became too expense to keep up and run. I have asked for a tour and plan to take a look before I leave...it looks a little creepy from the outside.

Kori and I went to church yesterday with another resident here at the house, George. George is from Louisiana. He had a heart transplant last March and has been recovering here at the house. Recently, he thought he was suffering from a sinus infection, went in to have it check out and found out he now has a tumor behind his eye. He is to have surgery to remove the tumor tomorrow. Please pray for George!

The church George attends here is the Calvary Baptist Church. We were definitely the minority (George is also a black gentleman) but Kori and I both enjoyed the service and they made us feel so welcomed. Kori loved it because she didn't have to read much. In this church they sing a lot and the pastor was a great speaker and delivered a very nice sermon...with a lot of energy!!! Kori said she plans to attend again next weekend.

Kori is doing great! Her attitude and spirit is amazing. She has not complained once, about anything. She did tell one of her doctors (Dr. Selzman), that she was sorry but he would be working during Christmas. She told him she had been through enough and her Christmas present is going to be a NEW HEART. He smiled and said OK.

Kori has said many times how much she appreciates everyone’s love and support!!

If you would like to keep up with Kori's progress, please post your request in the comments and I will email you the log-in info. Thanks, Resa

Hi everyone, Kim here again. Not much to update you on but I just thought I'd share a few things with you.

It is 10:30 a.m. on Friday and Kori is asleep in the bed next to me. She didn't sleep very well last night and was up a few times so we decided to let her sleep in for a little while this morning. We will probably go to lunch around noon and then head to the hospital for physical therapy at 2 p.m. I get excited for therapy too as I also get to workout.

Kori had a good day yesterday. We went to lunch and then the spa. She had her eyebrows waxed, a facial and her hair washed and styled. She said it felt "so good" and told the ladies she'd be seeing them about every couple of weeks for awhile. They are very sweet to her.

Kori and I were talking about her situation and all that has happened to her over the last several months. I told her, her story was made for a tv movie. She said, I know...I'd like Meg Ryan to play me because "I like her hair". Then she said, "Well I probably need someone with more attitude". We both laughed and agreed.

In another conversation we had, Kori said she was "very impressed" with my dad when he was here caring for her. She said he did such a great job and if physical therapy didn't come get her to walk; he'd take her and push her to do it.

She also said Doug did an amazing job and she thinks he deserves an honorary nursing degree. He took very good care of her and she is thankful to have such a great husband. She knows this has been difficult for him and says he basically has two kids to take care of between her and Kourtney.

This will be our last night in the hotel. Kori and I will move into the transplant house tomorrow. Jerry, who owns the home, has volunteered his van and hands to help get her moved.

Again, Kori is very thankful for all your support and prayers.

Happy Halloween!!!!

This Kori, typed by Kim. I know Kim just posted an update but we left something out. Kim just showed me pictures of Kourtney that when in the hospital I couldn't see and Doug had to tell me what they looked like. Today I can actually see them. So the roads are no longer safe because I WILL DRIVE AGAIN!!!!! Let's see how many tickets I can get in Salt Lake City.

Have a safe Halloween...eat some chocolate for me out of your kids' bags.

Chili Lunch Success!

We had a great turnout yesterday for the Benefit Chili Lunch to raise money for Kori. Thank you to all who came and/or donated to help support her! Also, a special thanks to all who helped set-up, serve and brought food...we ended up with more than enough and all went pretty smooth in the kitchen.

Our grand total was over $1300!!! Yay! I had great plans to take some pictures, but my purse got put away in the trunk of my car buried under all my Sunday school stuff...so no camera available...sorry! But you can take my word for it...we had a packed house for awhile!

Hearts are Healing IV

Kori was supposed to be released this morning! Yay! She and Doug have a "permanent" place lined up starting Nov. 1, but have found temporary housing until then. Here is the latest update from her family and below you'll find a couple I missed straight from Kori:

We weren't able to reach Kori by phone last night, but we assume she is still to be released today. Doug's sister Holly and a special visitor are flying to Salt Lake City on Friday. You might have already guessed that the special visitor is Kourtney. That will be exciting for Kori and Kourtney, also. Thanks, Holly. Kori's sister Kim will fly to Salt Lake on Sunday. Then, Doug, Kourtney and Holly will return to Kansas on Monday and Kim will stay. We are excited by Kori's progress. We still hope that she will be able to return home, even if just for a short while. Many have asked about the training to become a caregiver for Kori. We still don't know when that will be, but we will get the word out as soon as we know.

The prayers, encouragment and the fund raising efforts have been remarkable. Again, words can't begin to express our gratitude. Please continue to pray for Kori, Doug and Kourtney. They still have miles to go before their lives return to some semblance of normal.

This is Kori, typed by Doug. I want to Thank everyone for all of the thoughts, prayers and cards. I also want to give a big THANKS for everyone and all of the fundraising activities that you are doing in Kansas. I am feeling good and up walking around. Physical therapy is kicking my butt. I hope that everyone has a very good halloween and please trick or treat for me. I know that there will be no way to repay everyone for what they have done for me and my family and I really appreciate everything that is happening for us.

This is Kori again. I was able to go on my outing today. We ate at the Macaroni Grill and then went to a spa and had a massage, pedicure and my hair washed. It was wonderful. I also received a lot of cards today. I want to thank the students at Felten Middle School that had Angie Stieben send their cards to me. Tomorrow I will get discharged and access to a computer will be tougher. Most of the updates will probably come from someone else that we talk with. Once again I want to Thank everyone for everything they have done for me and my family.

Here is the latest update from Salt Lake City...posted by Doug (Kori's husband):

Kori had another busy day. She had therapy 5 times today. This is good for her since she slept real good last night. We also found out that she will be released from the hospital on October 21 or 22. I have found a place to live starting on November 1, 2008, so we will have to find a place to live from the 21st to the 31st. Kori is doing really well. Everyday she is very alert and in very good spirits. On Monday they (the LVAD coordinators) and myself will take her to a spa, so she can get pampered for a little while. She received several cards today, I think they got held up since they only said Kori Bigge. The hospital even had return to sender wrote on one of them. We will stay in contact with the hospital, so hopefully we can get any mail, since she will be leaving. Kori was able to talk to Kourtney today and I think it did both of them a lot of good. Kori is really missing seeing Kourtney and it will be good to get her out here even if it is only a few days.

Hearts are Healing II

I just went and check the updates on Kori after a busy weekend around here. Sounds like she is improving daily! Today she was moved into a rehab room rather than a regular hospital room. Her husband, Doug, and his mom just arrived in Salt Lake for their "turn" to be there with her.

She got to talk to her daughter, Kourtney, on the phone this weekend for the first time since leaving Kansas! Also, she has had more tests regarding her vision and though she is considered legally blind at this point, her dad gave several examples of her seeing things quite well. The doctors do not know if she'll ever be able to drive again, but are hoping for continuing improvement from here on out. Day to day now, she is not spending time in bed, but is either sitting or walking...so good news there.

Please continue to pray for Kori and her family. They have expressed their thanks several times on her website for all the prayers, cards and flowers so I'm passing their gratitude on to you.

Visit www.love4kori.org if you'd like to check out all the fundraising efforts currently in the works.

Hearts are Healing I

Today's update from Kori's dad was so positive that I've decided to change the titles of my updates...let's pray to keep them on the healing side from now on. Please remember to just send me a comment with your email if you'd like the log in info for Kori's website (again, just don't want to post it out here in the wide open). Thanks for understanding! ~Resa

Kori has had a good day. She is getting better each day. Just now, 3 Doctors came in to tell her that they can take out the feeding tube. I'm not sure why it took 3 to deliver the message, but that was great news. A pump that removed fluid from her chest was also shut down today. She will continue to have this tube in place, but any fluid will just flow rather than being pumped out. She is just about down to the Lvad tube or will be shortly. She has walked twice today, both times farther than yesterday. She isn't exhausted when her jaunts are finished as she was when she started walking a few days ago. One of the Lvad nurses told Kori yesterday that they will take her on a field trip next week. Her Lvad will be on batteries and the nurse (Erin) said they will be out 4-5 hours and will do anything Kori wants to do. She is recovering at a remarkable pace. I think she has amazed the Doctors and staff.

Her vision still isn't very good. Again, I am still not very patient in that regard. She was able to tell one nurse that she (the nurse) was wearing a dark red top and kacki (sp) pants. Kori thought her vision was about the same today. Another CT scan will be done tomorrow and, hopefully, that will tell a little more. Kori and I are going to watch the debate tonight. Marlyn and I fear that we have failed as parents since she chose to marry a Republican! Doug is bringing her an absentee ballot and I will work on her as much as I can before then, but I think he will have more influence than me.

I've had a really good day, also. One aide asked if I was Kori's brother and another wanted to know if I was Kori's husband. I think they may be from the visually impaired wing of the hospital, but it did make me stand up a little straighter.

Again, thanks to all who have prayed for Kori, Doug and Kourtney and offered encouraging comments. I have said this before, but we can never thank you enough. There are hundreds or maybe even thousands of people that are praying for Kori. Your response has been overwhelming. There are many, many people that are putting together fundraising events to help Kori and Doug with expenses. They maybe be here in Salt Lake for up to 2 years. I hope to have more positive news tomorrow.

Hearts are Hurting XIV

Finally, sounds like things are looking a bit better. Praise God for good news!

I took Marlyn and Kim to the airport yesterday and they both took their laptops with them, so I was without any weapons. Kori was just moved out of ICU to a nice large room with a couch, coffee table, etc. When the nurse in charge was showing Doug and me around the floor, she showed us the library that is close to Kori's room and it has several computers. I'm dangerous again!

Kori is doing very well. She walked about 200 feet this afternoon and sat in a chair for about 3 hours this morning. She is to be walking and doing more physical therapy, but the physical therapy folks says they are spread too thin. Her nurses say they have a problem in getting the required PT for the patients. Some of the nurses are even considering having the Doctors intervene.

Erin Davis is a nurse that is in charge of the Lvad unit and of Kori's care in general. She said that they have never had someone move out of ICU after the open heart surgery to implant the Lvad, as fast as Kori has done. She is much less confused and we can have a regular, normal conversation with her. She realizes that her vision is poor and says that she sees little pieces of things and not the whole picture. But, as soon as I hit the door of her ICU unit this morning, before I spoke to her, she said, "Hi Dad." When Doug came in later, she didn't know he was there until he spoke to her.

Erin also told us if we are able to get a group of people that would come to Salt Lake City to provide care for Kori after she is out of the hospital, they will send a person to Kansas to train a group on the Lvad. Is that great?

I will take Doug to the airport tomorrow. I told Kori she will then be stuck with me. She grudgingly said that will be "ok." I will stay until Doug gets back or Kim might return before Doug gets back. I don't want her here alone. The couch in her room makes into a bed, so I may even stay there a night or two.

Please keep the prayers coming for Kori, Doug and Kourtney.

Hearts are Hurting XIII

Oct. 2 4 p.m. (Mountain time)

Posted 2 hours ago (by Kori's family)

Kori had a CT scan this afternoon to try and determine why she can't see. We were just told by the nurse that she had a stroke. She didn't know if Kori's vision would return or even improve. We are waiting on her Doctor to come in to see her. I don't know what more she is expected to endure. That is all I want to say right now.

Hearts are Hurting XII

I'll sum up the latest updates in my own words since I've missed posting a couple.

Kori is now off the ventilator and starting to come around and be more alert. She is having conversations with family and has even been up to sit in a chair. She is still a bit confused and is having some vision issues that are being checked into. The confusion is partially from coming out of the heavy sedation of drugs.

Her family is looking for an apartment for her and Doug to stay in as they wait for a transplant. It is going to cost about $1000/month to rent...and they now think she may have to wait 12-18 months for a heart to match. During that time, she may have to have yet another open heart surgery to replace her current Lvad machine (which has a certain lifespan). Her insurance is covering most of the operation costs and some of the drugs she needs, but it's a bit mind boggling to think of all the expenses this type of procedure will create.

There are several groups of friends organizing fundraisers for the Bigge family. I am helping out with a group of other Pitt Staters. So far we have dates set for a Chili Luncheon (Oct. 26 in Belton, MO...metro KC) and a Bowling Night (Nov. 8 in Cheney, KS). I will post more details about these as I get them and you can always contact me for more info.

Thanks, everyone, for keeping Kori and her family in your hearts and prayers!!!

Hearts are Hurting XI

Sept. 28 12:25 p.m. (Mountain time)

I just did an update and I think it is lost somewhere in cyberspace. When we arrived at the hospital this morning we were told that Kori suffered heart arrithymia once during the night and then again this morning. She was shocked each time to return her heart to the proper rhythm. That wasn't the news we wanted. She is still on the ventilator, but there is some hope she will get off today. She hasn't had any problem with bleeding, which was a major concern. She isn't out of the woods for bleeding problems, but it hasn't been a problem so far. Kim just came out of Kori's ICU unit (only 2 at a time, please) and said they were trying to bring her out of sedation. Every time they do that, she gets uncomfortable and her pain level increases. Her body has been through so much, 2 open heart surgeries in less than 2 weeks and various other procedures. She needs time to allow her body to recover. Please continue to pray for Kori and Doug and Kourtney. We do appreciate your comments and encouragement.

If you would like to leave a message for Kori or her family, please get me your email address (using the comment post on this update) and I can give you the info to log on to her website. A fund has also been set up for tax deductible donations for Kori at Stockton Nat'l Bank. If you wish, send them to the SNB, c/o Kori Bigge Medical Fund, PO Box 511, Stockton, KS 67669. I am in the process of setting a date for a chili luncheon fundraiser...watch the posts for more info. ~Resa

Hearts are Hurting X

Even as far away from the situation as I feel, this sure has been a day spent on edge. I cannot fathom her families' emotions as they ride this roller coaster!

Sept 26 4 p.m. (Mountain time)

Kori came out of surgery at approx. 3 p.m. The surgeon said overall, it went well. They discovered a hole in Kori's heart that had to be repaired. The surgeon said that this was minor, compared to everything else. He also said that the right side of her heart, previously the healthy side, has also suffered from the strain of working so hard. Hopefully, it will recover. The surgeon seems to think that Kori doesn't have Peripartum Cardiomyopothy. He thinks she just had a major, major heart attack. He said she shouldn't have survived. It was good that it happened with a cardiologist right beside her. We can see Kori in about 15 minutes as she is now back in ICU. They are most worried about bleeding in the next few days and will probably keep her sedated through the weekend. On the other hand, they want to get her awake as soon as they can to check her cognitive function. The chance of problems there are more remote, but still are a concern.

If all goes well, Kori will probably have a transplant by the end of the year and will have to stay in Utah for another 6 months after that. For about a year, someone will have to be with her at all times. There is a remote chance (probably very remote) that her heart could recover and that she would not need a transplant. I can tell you that is what her Dad is praying for. Please contine to pray for her.

Hearts are Hurting IX

Well, I sure wish I wasn't up to the ninth post on this topic. Kori had surgery this morning...here are the details:

Sept. 25 10:10 p.m.

Posted 11 hours ago

I just prepared an update and when I attempted to post it, it disappeared.I will try again. Kori will undergo surgery at 6:30 a.m. Utah time (7:30 a.m. our time) to implant a permanent Lvad device in her chest. This device is battery operated and will allow mobility. This is deemed a "high risk" procedure. The Doctors are concerned about bleeding or a possible stroke. The plan is for her to be in intensive care for next week and then move to a regular room. At that time, she will start some type of rehab, but I am not sure exactly the nature of it at this point, She will have to stay in Salt Lake City for 60-90 days, but should be able to leave the hospital. This is all prior to any transplant.

Kori has suffered additional damage to her heart, after the heart attack on Sept. 13, evidently yesterday morning when she underwent the procedure at Hays. That may partially explain why the nurse reported that Kori was doing well and her heart was working and then 5 minutes later Dr. Benton said she needed to be transported and prepared for a transplant. There is still a possibility that Kori's heart could recover, but instead of 50% it is now less than 10%. It would be nice for some good news for a change.

Please pray for Kori; she needs your prayers now more than ever. Also, keep Doug in your thoughts and prayers. This is very difficult for him. Kourtney is with Doug's sister Beth and her family in Russell. We know she is in good hands.

Sept. 22

Posted 33 minutes ago

The test results were positive, but not quite as good as we had hoped. The left side of Kori's heart is now functioning at 30%, not the 40% we had hoped for. They didn't take her off the Lvad machine. The plan now is to try again on Wednesday. Dr. Benton said this was still encouraging. One part of the left side of her heart isn't "squeezing" as strongly as it should, but, hopefully, it will improve. This afternoon, Kori will be allowed to see Kourtney. Kourtney hasn't seen her Mom for 10 days. Please continue to pray for Kori, Doug and Kourtney.

Hearts are Hurting VI

This morning, Kori was scheduled to have another echo...actually, they were hoping to be done with it by 8:30 a.m. which was half an hour ago. I'll be checking her site for updates, meanwhile, the post below is from this weekend.

Also, I just want to thank those of you who have also gone through PPCM for visiting these updates and praying for Kori. I have passed the information you shared with me on to her family and hope that your advice can help her too!

(On Monday morning) They will take Kori to the operating room and put her under and reinsert the ventilator tube so an echocardiogram can be performed. Dr. Benton said if she has shown good improvement, they will remove the Lvad machine and she will be on her own. If she hasn't shown any further improvement, they will start the preparation for a heart transplant which will necessitate a transfer, probably to Salt Lake City. Since she has done so well, we are all cautiously optimistic.

Hearts are Hurting V

Here are two updates from yesterday on Kori. I'm headed out of town for the weekend, but will try to nab some computer time and add to the posts! ~Resa

Sept. 18

Posted 21 hours ago

Kori is off the ventilator. She is worn out and resting. There will be another echocardiogram, probably tomorrow. That will be an important one. Last night, before she was off the ventilator, she was writing instructions to Doug; don't forget to pay the babysitter, get the insurance forms, etc. She wanted to talk to her Mom last night. By using her hands, she asked if she had had a heart attack. She was also very concerned as to whether the ventilator was permanent. When she was assured that it wasn't, she seemed to relax. She's not in the clear yet, but she is moving in the right direction. There are not any current plans to send her on for a heart transplant.

Now that we have been able to finally take a deep breath, there are some rather ironic things that have taken place. Marlyn's sister Bev and her husband were here over the weekend. She taught at Ark City H.S. for many years. We discovered that she had the cardiac surgeon, Dr. Benton, as a student. She taught him well!

Doug's sister Beth lives in Russell with her family. She has a friend that attends a small church north of Russell. Beth's friend asked for prayers for Kori at last Sunday's service. After the service, a woman approached her and said that she was a good friend of Dr. Benton. Dr. Benton called her Saturday night (Kori's surgery was mid-day on Saturday). She said Dr. Benton was emotional and said he just needed to talk with someone. He related that he had a very rare case of a young woman, previously very healthy, that he had performed open heart surgery earlier that day. He was hopeful that he could help her and her family.

People here have been outstanding. The Doctors, nurses, Doug's family, Kori's co-workers and friends of she and Doug have gone beyond what anyone could expect. We can never thank them enough. Please continue to pray for Kori, Doug and Kourtney.

Sept 18 5:50 p.m.

Doug just talked with Dr. Benton. He described Kori's progess as "wonderful." Our visits with her have been short today as she has been resting and really worn out. She has had alot of breathing exercises. She had me pinch her nose while she was doing them. You can imagine the pain and discomfort from having your chest forced and cut open just 5 days ago. Dr. Benton said that they will probably try to take her off the Lvad machine on Monday. That is the device that is working for the left side of her heart. Keep praying for her; it's working.

Hearts are Hurting III

Yesterday, Tuesday, Kori had an echocardiogram that indicated a 10% improvement on the left side of her heart. This is good news and they will repeat the test today. In the next few days, the doctors will be deciding whether or not to move her to a location (probably Salt Lake City) to await a heart transplant.

She is still very, very ill and needs your thoughts and prayers! Thank you so much for helping support my friend in this way!

I am also planning some kind of fundraiser for her family...either a benefit BBQ & silent auction or some kind of online thing...if you have thoughts or ideas, please let me know.

Kori's family has started a website to keep friends updated on her condition. It was sweet to see pictures of her and her little ones, what a reminder of her passionate spirit. This is a photo of Doug, Kourtney (now 2 years old) and Kori.

I don't feel it appropriate to give out the log-in info here in the wide-open-blogosphere, however, I'll pass along info as I get it.
